Chasing God for Who He Is: Understanding the True Meaning of Seeking Him

This past week, I’ve been reflecting on something that’s been on my heart for a long time: how turning back to Jesus, focusing on Him, can literally open so many doors in your life. But here’s the thing—the motive behind why you turn to the Lord is what really matters most.

You’ve probably heard the scripture “Seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33) a million times. It’s a favorite for many, and rightly so. But I feel like sometimes people oversell or misunderstand what it actually means. I’ve seen it in myself, too—the temptation to run to God only when you want something, like a blessing, a breakthrough, or an answer.

But that’s not the heart of seeking Him.
Seeking God means seeking Him—not the things He gives. It’s about building a relationship, falling in love with Him. It’s about wanting to know God’s heart, His character, His love, mercy, and grace—not because you want to get something, but because He is the ultimate prize.

I remember when I first seriously sought God, it was about ten years ago. I was desperate to understand life—what does it mean to truly love, to truly live? Society had handed me a script, but it never felt right. There had to be more. I wanted the truth behind all the noise, the meaning behind this fleeting existence.
So, I chased after God—not the blessings, not the miracles, but the One who made everything. I wanted to see what life really was, beyond what people say it should be.

Of course, it wasn’t always easy. Seeking God means you face challenges—Satan doesn’t want you to find the truth. He tries to distract you, discourage you, break your spirit. But God is God—supreme, loving, faithful. When you chase Him for who He is, you find a strength and peace that nothing else can give.

The amazing thing is, when you genuinely seek God, the doors start to open. Not always the doors you expect, and not always in the ways you imagine. But there’s a certain kind of freedom that comes when your heart is set on Him, and because you’re aligned with God, He begins to move in your life in ways that overflow beyond your dreams.

This relationship with God becomes the cornerstone of your existence. If you want to know what life is—really is—then chase after God. He will show you the full picture: the good, the bad, the ugly, and all the messy moments in between. And He won’t leave you alone in the middle of it.

When the storms rage, He’s there. When the highs come, He celebrates with you. He provides comfort when you feel crushed, grace when you feel unworthy, and joy that bubbles up even in the darkest times.

That’s who God is. That’s who the Trinity is. They’re not distant or indifferent—they are intimately involved in every moment of your life.

Scripture reminds us in Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” It’s not a casual glance; it’s a wholehearted pursuit. And Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” This means in every low, God is right there, near and loving.

So, if you’re reading this and you’re wondering what it means to seek God, or if you’ve felt like seeking Him is just about asking for things, I want to encourage you: seek Him for who He is. Fall in love with the Lover of your soul. Let your heart chase after God, because in that pursuit, you will find everything you need.
This week, as I reflect on my own journey, I’m reminded that it’s never just about me.

It’s about relationship—with God, with myself, with others. The doors He opens aren’t just about blessing me but about blessing the people He places around me.
So keep chasing Him, not just for what He can do for you, but for who He is. That’s the kind of seeking that changes everything.
